This is a piece I have been wanting to create for several years.
Many things contributed to the initial inspiration but I never felt the time was right and I hadn’t formulated the entire concept completely in my head. After completing a smaller Samurai I was finally ready to break out and just let it flow.
During the process I made many changes and added things that I initially never intended to, so it evolved very organically. I sculpted the piece in a very loose and imprecise manner but also included much painstaking detail where I felt it was needed. I loved being able to just freely express myself with no regard for any limitations in terms of size and cost.
This piece I have called my “Ronin” Samurai. Ronin being a samurai who has fallen out of favor and privilege with his master and is now a ‘wanderer’ or ‘drifter’ with no allegiance and who answers to no man. However, his stance and the fact that he is disintegrating and flying apart evoke themes of introspection, self-assessment, re-evaluation of self- concept, dissolution of the self / ego and he may in fact be taking his journey to the afterlife as suggested by the crow bursting out of his back. (The crow is a symbol of the passage of the soul to the next world).
As always, the interpretation is best left to the observer but this piece for me evokes many different concepts, themes, ideas and feelings. I hope that as you study it, your own interpretations, feelings and memories will appear through the mists of the subconscious and stir something deep inside.

Brandon Borgelt is a self-taught contemporary sculptor from South Africa. He spent many years delving into his passion for nature and creativity in varied ways such as working at game reserves and filming nature documentaries. Finally in 2000, he started sculpting in bronze.

When he took his first tentative steps with this medium, he found that kneading, pressing and forming the clay seemed to come naturally, and soon realized that this was the perfect way to channel creative energy. Using his hands to bring life to a three dimensional figure felt far more natural than trying to create an illusion of three dimensions on paper. Borgelt has merged his passions seamlessly to create brilliantly detailed bronze sculptures that capture the essence of his subject, which are African wildlife animals and nude.

Brandon Borgelt was born in 1966, in Johannesburg.
