Rafael Duran i Benet nació en Terrassa en 1931. Pasó parte de su infancia en Italia y San Sebastián antes de establecerse en Barcelona. Su tío, el pintor y crítico Rafael Benet, influyó decisivamente en su formación artística, al igual que su contacto con artistas como Manolo Hugué y Joan Commeleran.
Durante los años 50 se instaló en Cadaqués, donde trabó amistad con Salvador Dalí y Marcel Duchamp. Su primera exposición individual fue en Colliure (1955), y más adelante desarrolló una larga trayectoria expositiva en salas como la Sala Parés de Barcelona. A lo largo de su vida realizó más de treinta exposiciones individuales y participó en numerosas colectivas en España y Europa.
Fue un artista de fuerte vocación mediterránea, centrado principalmente en paisajes, marinas y naturalezas muertas. Su estilo, con raíces impresionistas, destaca por la luminosidad y el color vibrante. En 2011 se celebró una retrospectiva en su ciudad natal, Terrassa. Falleció en 2015.
