👤 BIOGRAPHY: RAFAEL DURAN I BENET (1931–2015)
Rafael Duran i Benet was born in Terrassa, Spain, in 1931. He spent part of his childhood in Italy and San Sebastián before settling in Barcelona. Influenced by his uncle, painter and art critic Rafael Benet, and close to artists such as Manolo Hugué and Joan Commeleran, he developed a deeply Mediterranean artistic vision.
In the 1950s he moved to Cadaqués, where he became friends with Salvador Dalí and Marcel Duchamp. His first solo exhibition took place in Collioure (1955), followed by a long collaboration with Barcelona's Sala Parés. Over his career, he held more than thirty solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group shows across Spain and Europe.
His work focused on landscapes, seascapes, and still lifes, always marked by vibrant light, bold color, and expressive brushwork. In 2011, his hometown of Terrassa honored him with a major retrospective. He passed away in 2015.
