Initially, calligraphy was a tool for recording and communication, but as the technique improved, it gradually exhibited artistic beauty. Scholars regarded calligraphy as a way to cultivate oneself, integrating personal emotions and philosophical thoughts. Over time, calligraphy transcended its practical function to become a significant means of showcasing talent.

Ancient calligraphers and theorists not only advanced calligraphy techniques but also wrote books discussing methods, composition, and artistic conception, laying the foundation for calligraphy theory. During the Tang and Song dynasties, calligraphy emerged as an independent art form, considered "originating from the same source as painting," and became an essential component of traditional Chinese art.

The history of Chinese calligraphy can be traced back to the 14th century BCE with oracle bone script, used for divination and recording. Following this, in the 3rd century BCE, bronze inscriptions (jinwen) appeared on bronze vessels.

After Qin Shi Huang unified China, he commissioned Li Si to create the small seal script (xiaozhuan), standardizing the form of characters. In the Han dynasty, the clerical script (lishu) became mainstream, simplifying the strokes of seal script, making it easier to write, and facilitating the development of calligraphy as an important transition from seal script to regular script. During the Wei, Jin, and Southern and Northern Dynasties, regular script (kaishu), running script (xingshu), and cursive script (caoshu) emerged in succession. Regular script was standardized in the Tang dynasty and has been used as the standard script ever since.

In this piece, the main character "爱" (love) is written in clerical script, while the inscription part is written in running script.
