“Vanitas vanitatum et omnia vanitas” ( latin translation of the Hebrew “hèvel havalim” from the Qohèlet) is the famous phrase taken from the Ecclesiaste, a sapiential book of the Bible . It expresses the feeling of powerlessness in the face of the impermanence of things; it is the recognition in death of the defeat of all our earthly endeavors.
It is a warning to the ephemeral condition of existence, in synthesis expressed by the historical sentence “memento mori”.
This famous warning to the transience of the existence, ended up being symbolized by the human skull over the centuries.
Nowadays the representation of a human skull, from a tattoo to a worldwide known artwork, it’s simply something cool, trendy, no longer worthy of its significance. It’s the expression, once again, that everything - symbols included - is nothing but vanity.
For in our age no one seems to care much about the essence of existence, maybe we can only allow ourselves to be kidnapped by the inexorable, tragic and beautiful dance of life with the hope of bringing a bit of happiness and joy into it by surrendering to the transience of forms, just like in a “danse macabre”.

Salvatore Balice, schilder en fotograaf, werd geboren in Bari, de hoofdstad van de regio Puglia, in Zuid-Italië. Als autodidactisch kunstenaar heeft hij een achtergrond in architectonisch interieurontwerp.
Al zijn werken gaan verder dan het louter fenomenale en aardse karakter van expressie. Ze zijn de vrucht van een individueel onderzoek dat hij al meer dan twintig jaar uitvoert, waarbij de directe intuïtie van het ding zelf, van de essentie ervan, zijn enige pad is. Als een holle bamboe binnenin creëert het een ruimte op zich om te luisteren naar wat resoneert zonder het verpletterende geluid van de stem van het tumult, om niet langer te bezoeken maar om bezocht te worden, met name door stilte... Salvatore Balices' geïnteresseerd in de aura van het beeld, in de vergankelijkheid van de structuur.
Geboren in 1967, woont en werkt hij in Bari, Italië. In deze stad vindt hij zijn inspiratie en brengt hij zijn artistieke werken tot leven, waarbij hij de vele dimensies van schilderkunst en fotografie verkent. Zijn autodidactische reis stelt hem in staat om zijn persoonlijke visie op de wereld uit te drukken door middel van unieke composities, waar de sensatie van het vluchtige en de zoektocht naar essentie harmonieus samengaan.
