The character Narcissus is derived from Greek mythology.
Portrayed as a self-absorbed man looking down at his own reflection in a lake, he pays no heed to his surroundings and the ever-changing environment around him. In an interesting version and continuation of the story, he dies drowning in the waters in which he used to gaze upon his reflection, lost in thought about his beauty. From the place where he died, a flower sprung up, called narcissus after the man.
After Narcissus’s death, the lake regularly wept for him. Following this incident, a conversation happens between the lake above which Narcissus bent down to gaze at his face, and the newly-blossomed flower.
“Why do you keep weeping for him?” the flower asked, very puzzled. “Was Narcissus really that beautiful?” It added, now also very intrigued.
To which the lake replied:
“I weep for Narcissus, sure, but I never noticed Narcissus was beautiful. No, I weep because each time he bent down
upon my waters to gaze at himself, I could, in the depths of his eyes, my own beauty reflected.”
My narcissus has found a place where he can see his true reflection, not an image created by his surroundings, where he projects himself according to given circumstances among the people who are trying to change him so he can fit in the standards created by the majority. This sentiment reflects the state of our current society, with many people trying to change their appearances to be appreciated by others, following the rise of social media, this has become increasingly common, making many people insecure about their looks.
But my narcissus is not that, he is not self-indulgent or self-harming, he is self-loving and confident. My Narcissus is not an echoist who puts other people’s thoughts above in priority to his own, not realizing that they might be harmful for himself.
Even though narcissist is a derogatory term, I chose this title for my painting because my narcissus is childlike, when a child looks at his reflection in the mirror for the first time: he plays, laughs and enjoys himself without worrying about other things.
As a child doesn’t pay attention to his looks, as a child presents itself to the world the way he is, letting others decide how to view him, so does my narcissus.
