I recently purchased a "ground" from a major online art retailer that is supposed to be used to cover mistakes on watercolor art and be painted over. I recently purchased a "ground" from a major online art retailer that is supposed to be used to cover mistakes on watercolor art and be painted over. This ground is very viscous and dries within 24 hours. Instead of using this ground to cover mistakes, I came up with the idea of using it in the artwork itself. My intention was to create a watercolor painting, that is typically flat, with some depth. This effect was achieved with the ground. I had tried using a sample piece and covered the entire watercolor paper with the ground then painted over it. What I discovered was that the ground does not absorb the paint as well as the watercolor paper. As a result, the majority of the paint slid off the ground.

With this piece, Melting, I decided to be more judicious with the ground, covering only part of the paper. Not knowing exactly how it would look, I made arches across the paper. After I decided on the colors I was going to use, I realized that the ground looked like it was melting. And the idea for this painting was born.

This particular ground comes in various colors, so I'm entertaining the notion of purchasing different colors, and creating a painting using only the ground. But I'll be curious to see how well this painting is received first.

Melting would look very nice in a home or office setting.

This painting is being considered for a show with the National Watercolor Society. It will remain Unavailable until the show is over.

I am a watercolor artist originally from California now living in Nevada. I graduated from San Francisco State University where I studied Fine Arts. Classes included figure drawing, color values, acrylics, oils, and art history. My love of art goes back to childhood as my family encouraged me to develop my skills by giving me art materials and art books. My current medium is watercolor. The bold use of colors and interesting landscapes has played a strong role in my work. Although I have been working with art since childhood, it is only within the last few years that I have felt the passion to get back into it. My passion for art is reflected by the use of strong, saturated color and theme. I have exhibited in galleries on both coasts.  I have participated in Open Studios events in Santa Cruz and Sacramento, California. I participated in the Lehigh Valley Garden Art Tour and the Downtown Historical Bethlehem ArtWalk, I showcased my work at the Southern Lehigh Valley Public Library. My work has been displayed locally here in Nevada.  I am a current member of the California Watercolor Association (CWA), the National Watercolor Society (NWS), and the Sierra Watercolor Society based out of Reno NV.
