The artwork is a mosaic panel made of shaped glazed terracotta tiles. The mosaic belongs to the “cities series”, freely inspired by ancient images of medieval Tuscan villages and cities. My research focuses on the study of space and the composition of forms: what appears is a tangle of lines and surfaces that follow each other harmoniously in a series of houses, churches, walls, streets. The village is always surrounded by walls. The landscapes of the series are always typically Tuscan in tone, and the one here shown represents Pisa, the city where I live. The shape of the city is a "cup" that contains it in a fantastic and imaginary vision.

Nicoletta De Francesco, born in Florence, has been full professor of Computer Science at the Department of Information Engineering of the University of Pisa until 2020. She has been Vice Rector of this University for nine years. Always passionated about figurative art, she began  her career as a ceramic artist in the mid-1990s. Her artworks are mosaics made of terracotta shaped tiles painted in bright colors, depicting images freely inspired by medieval iconography. Nicoletta De Francesco’s technique consists in sketching an initial paper scheme, then used to decompose a sheet of clay into different shaped tiles, which are subsequently fired in the ceramic kiln and then glazed and fired a second time. The mosaic is then reassembled on a wooden support. Her artworks are always exhibited in the Gallery: Studio d'arte Barbuti - De Francesco, Via dei Mille, Pisa (Italy).
