Marie Malherbe
Marie Malherbe was born in 1975 in Nice (France). Her fine arts education starts at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva (Charles Vogt’s class). She continues with sculpture in Paris (France), getting at the same time a bachelor in Mathematics (Paris-VI Pierre et Marie Curie University) and a Master’s degree in History at the Sorbonne. In 1996 she wins a scholarship from the Sorbonne in Byzantine History at the Ca’Foscari University in Venice. There she studies traditional and experimental etching techniques with Nicola Sene at the Centro Internazionale della Grafica. In 2003 she sets up her own painting studio in Vienna (Austria), continuing her research with German artist and art historian Ilona Neuffer.
Her work is about beauty as a divine sign lifting up souls and thus transforming the world. She paints her enchanted world in a poetic style mixing byzantine and baroque, as well as Jugendstil and contemporary languages.
She has been exhibiting in Paris, Vienna and Italy, and in the Venice Ghetto Vecchio every year since 2012. Her work has been recently selected for the opening of the « Photissima » Pavillion in the framework of the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015, and for the Cathedral Jubilee installation in Treviso in 2016. Various large scale installations of hers have been selected and exhibited in Sicilian monuments in the framework of the « Abramitic Pavilion » in the Interreligious Biennale of Sacred Art (BIAS) in Palermo in 2016 and 2018. She has been decorating the newly restaurated Pelegrini’s Chapel in Vienna from 2017 onwards. She keeps exhibiting small as well as large scale works in spiritually meaningful monuments and places.

Si vous visitez le Ghetto de Venise en ces derniers jours de juillet, ne manquez pas l'occasion d'être fasciné par l'exposition "La grâce de l'amour" : les œuvres de l'artiste niçoise Marie Malherbe sont toutes consacrées au Cantique des Cantiques, le Shir ha Shirim de la tradition juive.
L'exposition est ouverte jusqu'à la fin juillet à la galerie IMAGO ARS, à Campiello delle Scole, dans le vieux ghetto.
Pour le présenter, nous empruntons les mots de notre collègue Francesca Ruth Brandes :
" Des œuvres qui brûlent ", celles de La Grâce de l'amour de Marie Malherbe, exposées pendant tout le mois de juillet à la galerie IMAGO ARS de Cannaregio. De petits cercueils incandescents pour un texte d'une carnalité inhabituelle. La force de l'élément féminin, la jubilation de la nature font place à une ligne cachée, indicible, parfois difficile à contenir. La vérité, dans les tableaux de Marie, émerge de manière implacable.
Le Cantique n'est pas une œuvre légère et sereine. Il est écrit que l'Amour est dur / Comme la Mort ; la lumière est hyper-définie, mais la consistance est rocheuse. L'impulsion, l'élan vital sont même redoutables, en déclarant cette passion totale, cet amour englobant.
L'artiste procède de manière lumineuse, mais ne perd jamais de vue le code du vers. Il s'agit de la matière "très bonne et très belle", comme l'affirme Genèse 1, 27 et 31, mais elle cache aussi autre chose. Il y a la compréhension parfaite, à l'image de Dieu, dans laquelle l'image d'amour est suspendue dans un Présent sans ombre, mais où l'on discerne un désir plus élevé, plus complexe que l'immédiateté sensuelle.
Au-delà de l'interprétation, au-delà de toute mimésis raffinée - qui ont toujours été des figures de son parcours formel et intellectuel - ce qui frappe, c'est la transfiguration du conte, le choix de la bonne clé pour accéder au mystère. L'épiphanie du sens de tout : la joie, mais aussi la douleur, la mort. Incroyable de parler de la mort, dans les jardins de Marie, pourtant les signes sont tous là, car il n'y a pas de vie qui ne connaisse pas de fin ; c'est la finitude humaine qui est chantée, face à la perfection divine. Le reste n'est qu'émerveillement, confiance totale, foi."
