St.Eustace (Eustachius), Christian martyr, made in mixed media (plaster, stone, pigment, mineral medium, metal frame).
Katarina is searching for an ecological way to interpret Orthodox iconographic tradition. She researches the use of contemporary ecological materials as well as graphic language that would remain through to byzantine tradition and yet answer the actual issues and questions of our time.
According to legend, prior to his conversion to Christianity Eustace was a Roman general named Placidus. While hunting a stag in Tivoli near Rome, Placidus saw a vision of a crucifix lodged between the stag's antlers. After a wild hunt stag turned to him and said "Placidus, why dost thou persecute me? I am Jesus, who died for love of thee, and who will save thee." similar words that apostle Paul once heard. He was immediately converted, had himself and his family baptized, and changed his name to Eustace. Following that event he and his familly suffered a series of calamities to test thier faith.
That is a rare occasion that a saint was converted by or through an animal (nature).
