There is a bond between all things in the universe. We live with it, we speak it and we see it. This bond is known to humankind since antiquity, and it brings harmony to our souls, order to our worlds, promises of something greater in our lives.

It is the golden ratio, the principle standing at the core of the most glorious creations of both man and nature. This principle follows a sacred equation, a Fibonacci sequence, defining the physical world with abstract mathematics. It is also the principle that inspired Francois Hurtaud to create a series of sculptures that encapsulate and disperse the mysteries of endurance and harmony.

Prompted by meditations on Marcus Aurelius’ eponymous work, Francois Hurtaud felt challenged by the ideas of transcience and timelessness. As one of the dominating recurring motifs in “Meditations”, the passing of time inspired the artist to further contemplate temporality. He was looking for an actualization of the stoic canon, an artistic response to the philosophical memento mori. He found it in the Fibonacci sequence and its visual equivalent, the golden section. For Francois Hurtaud, the sequence represented the means to transfer the mathematical language of perfection to a tangible artifact, one we recognize everywhere in our world, and beyond. So, he created an objet d’art in concordance with the golden mean as a way to evoke and model the allegory of the supreme order.

He used the language of abstraction, the technique of contemporary sculpture, and his knowledge of design to create. As a result, he got a marvelous thing of beauty, a spherical golden spiral that appears to be floating above the ground, defying gravity. The shining surface of the piece echoes the ethereal realms of classical art, while the simple, undulating form suggests the connection shared between all existing matter.

The sculpture is titled “Demain Peut-être”. It alludes to the elusiveness of tomorrow, as an everlasting memorial of the natural constants, an object of beauty and harmony. Its universal shape surpasses styles and trends, while its meaning invites people to meditate upon their possible futures, envisioning the most harmonious outcomes.

“Demain Peut-être” sculpture is a limited edition series crafted in two sizes. It’s sculpted in plaster in hand-made molds, coated with a bespoke alloy of tin and copper that mimics gold and varnished.
