1. What/who inspired the work?
I was inspired by the resilience and grace of village women, who live simple yet meaningful lives. Their connection to the earth and the traditional crafts they practice inspired me to use materials that reflect their world. The natural textures and raw beauty found in rural settings motivated me to capture the essence of their strength and elegance through this piece. "Village Grace" is my tribute to these women, honoring their quiet yet profound impact on their communities.
2. What do you hope its viewers will feel/think?
I want viewers to feel a connection to the beauty and simplicity of rural life. The textured materials invite them to engage not just visually but also emotionally, evoking feelings of warmth, nostalgia, and admiration for the subject. I hope they reflect on the strength of women in traditional settings and appreciate the richness that exists in the everyday lives of people who are often overlooked. I want this piece to spark thoughts about how beauty can be found in the most humble of places.
3. Why did you choose the medium, subject matter, and style?
- Medium: I chose materials like jute, rice, pulses, and coffee because they are connected to rural life, reflecting the natural, organic world of the village. These materials bring texture and life to the piece, symbolizing the connection between the earth and the people who work with it every day.
- Subject Matter: The village woman embodies resilience and grace, and I wanted to celebrate that through this work. She represents the strength, beauty, and cultural richness that often goes unnoticed but is deeply rooted in tradition.
- Style: The mixed-media, mosaic-like style allowed me to layer textures and details, creating depth that mirrors the complexity of rural life. Each material tells a story, just as each detail in the woman's life contributes to her strength and beauty.
