Tihomir Ivancan
TIHOMIR IVANČAN was born on 4th of November 1980 in Rijeka. His parents are from peaceful and tame land called Podravina, from little villages near Koprivnica where Croatian naive art was born in the beginning of the 20th century. From his early childhood days Tihomir feels strong connection and love towards naive art and finds inspiration in his enormous admiration towards nature and all its beauty. His first lessons about painting on glass Tihomir gets from Mijo Kovačić and Ivan Večenaj, the pionner in Croatian naive art – glass painting.. Tihomir is a member of world famous society called Hlebinska udruga slikara i kipara naive since 1999., but he starts painting in 1996. when he coloured his first glass with a motive of a little crumbly house. Tihomir, as a young artist of the last generation of naive artists, is different in juxtaposition with other artists because of his unique theme field and motives. His paintings are born from his great gratitude that he feels for the nature and because of that his paintingsare like a dream: sometimes mystical, sometimes romantic, sometimes sad or happy. The themes of his paintings are mostly connected with people and nature and the times when people and nature were one. The motives are various but mostly he paints hunters, fishermans, lost kids in the forests, tired peasants resting in the field, long hard winters, sad autumns and worm springs. His art expression is a synthesis of his love for his parentage that is Podravina and his love for his home that is this seascape. Life between this two completely different worlds resulted in his rising from the typical perspective that naive art represents and finding his own remarkable art expression which is based on his immense imagination and creative skills. He had about 15 collective exibitions in : Madrid, gallery Eboli, Bruxelles, Katowice, Moscow, Hlebine, Koprivnica, St. Jakob in Defferegen,... and many self – contained exibitions in Novi Vinodolski, Crkvenica, Krapina, Zagreb, Koprivnica and many times in Rijeka. From 2010. he is a member of Croatian naive art society (Hrvatsko društvo naivnih umjetnika) in Zagreb.

ABOUT MY WORK, INSPIRATION AND CONNECTION WITH NATURE
The region called Podravina is specific because of it's big endless forests, cristal clear lakes and people who really seem like they came out from a tale... I for one have so many memories related to this region, memories from my early childhood days... All of my love for the nature and the region of Podravina was born in my memories...Adriatic coast, where I am born..oh, it's a totaly different landscape. With a mighty mountains and blue sea....
You should be affraid of the dark swamp and frightening smell of sumpor that spreads arround because no one knows all the things that had sank into it: an old horse, a sick cow, wild hunter with a duck skin between his fingers, a dying comet, a deer in a search for his madein... You should be affraid to step into theese deep forests where wild pigs digg in the mud, where the fox hides and waites for a rabbit... You should be affraid to spend the night in this forest where the ghosts sleep under the trees, where drowned brides scream the name of their desperate mothers... You should be affraid because this forest is a place where the dead wath on the live ones... Only because of that fear that I feel when I step in the forest at night, because of my faith and my belief in something that's out of this world, in something mystic, because of the in the same time sad and happy look pointed to the peacefull lake, because of the long hard winters... Because of the beautiful springs when the nature wakes up, the snow is melting and people go in the fields to work and provide food for their needs...Only because of all theese things I have a different view on the world around us and on the life which is given to me and which is one of a kind, unique and just mine... And I want to paint about this life, I want to capture it in my paintings so it could never be forgotten and always a part of me, my spirit and my personality... Where is all my imagination coming from? You just have to look at this beautiful world around us and you will get the answer to that question. Just look thees great fields, theese forests, theese lakes, mountains, blue sea, clouds, the sky at night, the land, the blood spillt for the land, the fear you feel because of all that beauty...and then you will really know the answer...
