What inspired you to create art and become an artist? (events, feelings, experiences...)

I've always been the kind of person who trusts their instincts in matters of passion. I vividly recall my introduction to painting after seeing a hand made advertising poster of Arnold Schwarzenegger at a cinema, and from that moment, I've been an enthusiast and practitioner of art, aspiring to elevate it further.

What is your artistic background, the techniques and subjects you have experimented with so far?

I come from a family of talents; my father excelled as a furniture designer , while my mother showcased brilliance as a textile artist in Ghana. Additionally, my younger brother Kelvin Odartei Cruickshank , a self-taught engineer, further attests to our family's aptitude. My journey as an artist has evolved over the past decade, with a particular focus on experimenting and exploring charcoal as a tool and material for creating magnificent artworks. The transformative nature of my artistic processes during different periods fascinates me. Having studied at Takoradi Technical University, I appreciate the significant influence of their excellent training and mentorship on my artistic endeavors.

What are the 3 aspects that differentiate you from other artists, making your work unique?

Uniqueness a priority I enforce in both my working processes and final work. I see my work as a unique thump print visually and conceptually.

Where does your inspiration come from?

I Am inspired by myself and my immediate environment .

What is your artistic approach? What visions, sensations or feelings do you want to evoke in the viewer?

I invoke themes of mortality and resilience— the capacity to endure life's transformative journey, standing steadfast and motivated through both favorable and challenging circumstances.

What is the process of creating your works? Spontaneous or with a long preparatory process (technical, inspiration from art classics or other)?

Typically, I begin my artistic process with a reference picture, often conceptualized in my mind, though I predominantly work with references. Once the images are prepared, I mentally distort them before translating them onto the canvas. My figures take shape entirely through the combination of charcoal and paint before any additional layers. I hold a deep spiritual connection to charcoal, as it has been my preferred medium and initial artistic passion. Consequently, my artworks become a fusion of my past (charcoal) and my current passion (painting).

Do you use a particular work technique? if so, can you explain it?

I will categorize my works as part of expressionism.

Do you have a format or medium that you are most comfortable with? if yes, why ?

I hold a deep spiritual connection to charcoal, as it has been my preferred medium and initial artistic passion. Consequently, my artworks become a fusion of my past (charcoal) and my current passion (painting).

Where do you produce your works? At home, in a shared workshop or in your own workshop? And in this space, how do you organize your creative work?

I work from my home studio, constantly near my creations. I sense a deep connection, making it challenging to detach from them.

Does your work lead you to travel to meet new collectors, for fairs or exhibitions? If so, what does it bring you?

My artistic journey has been wonderfully enriching. I've had the privilege of showcasing my work in both local and international exhibitions, providing the opportunity to connect with diverse individuals, including art lovers, collectors and enthusiasts.

How do you imagine the evolution of your work and your career as an artist in the future?

The future is bright, I aspire to have my creations documented and displayed in galleries and museums worldwide. The prospect of sharing the same space with my mentors is something I anticipate.

What is the theme, style or technique of your latest artistic production?

I'm currently engaged in a project that requires a touch of mystery at this moment.

Can you tell us about your most important exhibition experience?

My exhibition experiences so far has been great.

If you could have created a famous work in the history of art, which one would you choose? And why ?

“Mona Lisa” by Leonardo DaVinci

I love this beautiful work because it has allowed me to perceive art as treasure rather than mere commodities.

If you could invite one famous artist (dead or alive) to dinner, who would it be? How would you suggest he spend the evening?

I aspire to dine and engage in conversations with El Anatsui.
