H&M has introduced a new clothing line in collaboration with the managers of the Jean-Michel Basquiat estate and fashion label Who Decides War, inspired by the artist's lesser-known works that delve into themes rooted in the Black artists' experience. This collaboration originated from the "King Pleasure" exhibition curated by Basquiat's sisters in 2022, which showcased rare paintings and drawings and forged partnerships with brands like Who Decides War, co-founded by Ev Bravado and Téla D’Amore.
Speaking to Vogue, Ev Bravado highlighted their intention to spotlight artists who deeply influenced Basquiat, aiming to underscore their contributions to his artistic journey and celebrate the ongoing impact of Black art and culture. Unlike past collaborations focusing on Basquiat's more familiar motifs such as skulls and crowns, Bravado and D'Amore sought to explore the artist's diverse inspirations and their relevance today. Jean-Michel Basquiat, a pivotal figure in New York's 1980s art scene, left a lasting impression with his provocative and socially conscious works, which continue to resonate globally and command significant prices at auctions, reaffirming his enduring influence on contemporary art.
Scheduled to debut on July 18th in select stores, the Basquiat-inspired collection by H&M and Who Decides War not only celebrates Basquiat's artistic legacy but also underscores a commitment to honoring his multifaceted impact on art and culture. As excitement mounts for the collection's release, it underscores Basquiat's ability to transcend artistic boundaries and inspire creativity across diverse mediums, solidifying his status as a timeless cultural icon.
