Do you love Belgian painters?
The Museum of Fine Arts in Brussels was founded by Napoleon Bonaparte and later evolved into one of the country's most prestigious cultural institutions. Its collection has been enriched by private donations over the centuries. Works by Hieronymus Bosch, Rogier van der Weyden, Dirk Bouts, Lucas Cranach, Gerard David, and more form the main nucleus of the museum's collection.
The work of early Flemish Masters such as Jan van Eyck can be seen in the Koninklijke Museum voor Schone Kunsten, Antwerp, and Mechelen Cathedral. Later, in the 19th century, there were painters like James Ensor, who developed a broad expressionistic technique. These painters took on the subjects of nature and the human condition in their works.
The Geometric Abstraction movement was particularly popular among Belgian artists. They believed that the art they produced could improve modern urban life. They submitted many projects and are well represented in the city's metro network. Pol Bury's angular sculptures, for example, point in all directions in the ceiling of the Bourse. In Osseghem, a huge marble disk welcomes travellers. And in Brussels, the abstract typographies of Walter Leblanc loom over the platforms of the Elisabeth metro station.
During the twentieth century, avant-garde art flourished in Belgium. The avant-garde movement, which drew many foreign artists, took root in Brussels, and was led by renowned Belgian artists such as Paul Joostens. He was also in touch with many international artists, including Marcel Duchamp, Fernand Leger, and Italian futurist Filippo Marinetti.
