A rocky precipice boldly rises above a landscape covered in a thick sea of fog. In the middle ground, several other ridges jut out from the mass. Through the wreaths of mist, forests of trees can be perceived atop distant escarpments. Beyond, the pervading brume stretches out indefinitely, the horizon becoming indistinguishable from the cloud-filled sky.
Long considered one of the masterpieces of Classical Romanticism, the message conveyed is one of Kantian self-reflection, expressed through the grey murkiness of the weather.
Friedrich said : "The artist should paint not only what he has in front of him but also what he sees inside himself.”
