The early part of my life was spent wanting to be a writer like my father. Though I had a way with words I found writing to be a slog. At the time I took that to mean I was lazy and beat myself up a lot. But at the age of 20 I tried making a painting with dry markers and while it was very primitive an artist friend of mine liked it. I had no thought of being an artist, I couldn't draw a decent stick figure at the time but I instantly fell in love with painting. I spent hundreds of hours making dry marker paintings with no thought to even trying to sell them and of course they were unsellable because dry mark is not light fast. I just did it because painting had worked it's way into my bones. Whenever I looked at the art magazines out of New York I despaired not only because they were clearly better than me but because I realized how many artists were out there. Who was I to try to join their ranks? I would stop painting for a while but it was in my bones and I had to go back and paint again, until I saw another art magazine. This went on for years until I started taking lessons and classes and improved my drawing skills. Gradually I began to sell paintings and portraits. Other than my family, painting is my singular passion. I must paint, selling be damned
