Julia Grande was born in Belarus in 1987 and grew up in Russia. In 2013, she moved to Norway and has been living on the coast with her husband and little son ever since.
Julia is a self-taught artist who has always been creative and enjoyed drawing. Unfortunately, she never had the opportunity to attend art school, except for taking some art classes when she was eight years old and some workshops in adulthood. Initially, she started with black and white portrait drawings, but gradually abstraction took over.
Now Julia paints loosely and expressively, and the painting process is like a spiritual practice for her, similar to dynamic meditation. In order to truly express herself, she needs to quiet her chattering mind and follow her intuition. This allows her to paint from a place of momentum, impulse, or instinct, rather than intellect or a "know-it-all" attitude.
Color and texture are of great importance to Julia. She loves beautiful colors that are pleasing to the eyes and uses them to convey peace and tranquillity. Nature and everything that moves her are her inspirations for her paintings. However, what gives her true strength to continue doing art is her desire to explore that place within herself from where the art is created.
Acrylic paint is Julia's favorite medium, and she enjoys working with various mediums such as modeling paste to create texture. She uses all sorts of tools, such as brushes, palette knives, and anything she can find at home or in the garage that can make a unique mark. Julia even enjoys applying paint with her fingers.
The artist aims to capture the moment of painting in a way that is felt by the viewer. This is like trying to communicate the unexplainable or reveal the unseen. Above all, the work is about the energy that is present.
