In my series 'plastered', I make polymer clay sculptures in the shape of men who have had too much to drink and are hanging around somewhere, men who have enjoyed life a little too much and are chilling somewhere, men who like to have fun , show off a bit and be colorful. In my series 'plastered', I make polymer clay sculptures in the shape of men who have had too much to drink and are hanging around somewhere, men who have enjoyed life a little too much and are chilling somewhere, men who like to have fun , show off a bit and be colorful. But one day this will be over. After all, after life always comes the other, death.
I was inspired by the text from the book Sangrita and Tequila, a novel with recipes about the life of Frida Kahlo. This book contains a poem, translated into Dutch: 'Het Gouden Bootje'.
"I am leaving, to the harbor, where the golden ship is moored that is supposed to take me with me, I am leaving, I only come to say goodbye, goodbye woman, goodbye for good, adieu. My eyes will never see you again, and your ears will never hear my song more. I will make the sea bigger with my tears. Goodbye woman, goodbye forever, adieu….”
The sculpture is painted with acrylic paint and finished with varnish.
My black sculpture lies on a gold table, sprinkled with salt. This causes the gold paint to take on a green color, the color of the water of the sea. The salt is the salt of the sea water. It was difficult to give a title to this sculpture, I was very emotional seeing his body, ready to die. Ready to say goodbye. Take me with you, it seems to say. I'm ready.

Focus on a future you dream of creating

I am a self-taught artist and a dreamer. And I struggle a lot. I always dream of a colorful life. While living in Southern California I took up photography. I painted fun and expressive art on clothing, designed by me and sold to some small fancy shops on Melrose Blvd.  I painted murals for children's rooms but found that painting on canvas had my preference. Twelve years later: back in the Netherlands, I took several workshops sculpting in stone. It became a journey: sculpting in stone, sculpting in clay, analog, and then digital photography, ending up painting with acrylics and drawing digitally. Taking online classes with Pamela Caughey and Nickolas Wilton and Suzanne Allard, designer. Still overcoming my insecurities, but at last, I find great pleasure in painting and using different media.  I procrastinate at times, but I see that mainly as an inner search for the next thing to come. And when busy with my hands, my heart takes over and I get completely lost in my work.  I love imperfection while trying to be perfect. I figure that if I don't try and spread my wings, I will never know how high I can fly.
