The watercolor artist Ekaterina Lagutina was born in the city of Bryansk, Russia, in 1987. She attended the School of Fine Arts and spent several years studying and practicing iconography. In 2011, she moved to Greece and was admitted to the University of Western Attica in the Department of Graphic Arts, where she continued her studies in fine arts. She participated in several international watercolor exhibitions. Since 2018, she has been living and working in Cyprus. The artist creates landscapes using the "wet on wet" watercolor technique, incorporating her impressions and artistic experience into her works.
In my work on watercolors, I seek ways to convey the play of light through the luminosity of the paper, without using white paint or masking fluid. Every day, observing nature, I paint a landscape in my imagination and then transfer it to the material, often without using references. I rely on impression and train my photographic memory. I engage in plein air practice to develop tone perception. Sometimes I paint the same landscape that touched me several times until I achieve the impression from my work that I observed in nature. I don't repeat watercolors because it seems boring to me. I do not use black color. I try to complete the work in one session. The greatest joy for me as an artist is when the viewer, seeing my work, describes the very impression that I experienced myself, the very thing that inspired me to create the landscape.
