In this photo, we see people walking on a frozen canal. According to friends and locals, snow in Groningen happens once every 10 years.
As a Canadian, I did not find this shot particularly exciting or special at the time because this is a common activity to do during winters back home. Whether it's frozen ice hockey or commuting to work on the Rideau Canal, it really didn't speak to me.
Now almost 3 years later, it has become one of my favourite street photography shots taken on my year abroad.

YC Captures (aka Yousef) is a Canadian documentary and street photographer.
