Tivadar Csontváry Kosztka was a Hungarian painter who lived from July 5, 1853, to June 20, 1919. He was part of the avant-garde movement of the early 1900s. He was one of the first Hungarian painters to be known in Europe. He did most of his work in Budapest. He made more than a hundred paintings, but The Lonely Cedar (Magányos cédrus) is probably the most famous and well-known of them all. His work has some similarities to post-impressionism and expressionism, but he taught himself and can't be put into one style. He called himself a "sunway painter," which is a term he made up.
Some of his works are in the collections of the Hungarian National Gallery in Budapest and the Csontváry Museum in Pécs, among other places.
