“Agoraphobia”

A reaction to over population.

This wearable artwork was inspired by a poem written by Dayang Yraola
about fear of people or overcrowding.

The faces represent individuals with varied personalities. Text
are incorporated to add to the visual texture of the work. The
texts also present the positive characteristics of each individual
and as affirmation (in the form of chants or prayers) of the good
qualities of the Filipinos (Maligaya, Malaya, Katapatan, Pagmamahal,
Pag-ibig, Karangalan, Maharlika). In spite of the challenges brought
about by over population and other related issues faced by
developing countries, Filipinos have always been positive and
progressive.

Agoraphobia
Poem by Dayang Yraola

Stop the crowd from walking
against the grain of my journey
it’s difficult for me to catch up or loose them
even if I ran ten miles a minute
or million lightyears a second.

Stop the crowd from aging
against the weathered weather
of my fountain of fidgety youth
there is no sense forgetting
nor there’s any in remembering.

Stop the crowd from whispering
against my left deaf ear
and my right that’s hard of hearing
a whisper is a scream
like a wind hauling mutiny
from known calm and harmony.

Or wake me up from this nightmare
where I am locked up in a cell
with the keys jingling and clanking
against the soles of crowds
that cannot be seen.
