Born July 27, 1956 in the town of Kineshma in Ivanovo region. In 1975, he graduated from the Ivanovo art school. After that, he entered the Leningrad Institute of painting sculpture and architecture named after I. E. Repin at the faculty of easel painting, from which he graduated with honors in 1984. After graduation, he lives and works in Yaroslavl. In 1994-1997 and 2005-2010, he taught at the Yaroslavl art school, taught a course in painting, drawing and easel composition. Since 1985 - permanent participant of regional, zonal, national and all-Union exhibitions, group exhibitions in Russia, Germany and France. Sergey Sokolov is the author of the portrait gallery of honorary citizens of Yaroslavl. He is also the author of interiors and monumental murals of public institutions.Easel works of the artist are in the Yaroslavl art Museum, the Museum of the history of the city of Yaroslavl, the Ivanovo regional art Museum, the international Confederation of the Union of Artists (Moscow), the MARHI Museum (Moscow), the Alexander Gallery (Paris), private collections in Russia, the United States, France, Germany and other countries.

Since 1991, Sergey Sokolov has been engaged in icon painting. He is the head of the Guriy Nikitin icon-painting workshop, created with the blessing of Archbishop Alexander (Mogilev) of Kostroma and Galich (2003), where masters of icon painting and wall painting, restorers and masters of other areas of Church and applied art work. Here icons are created in the best traditions of the masters of the Armory, Yaroslavl and Kostroma icons of the XVII century, the school of Moscow iconography of the XV—XVI centuries, as well as in the new Athos style of the late XIX— early XX centuries. and in an academic manner of writing. Icons created in the workshop are located in churches in Russia, Kazakhstan, Ukraine, and Belgium. The work of the icon-painting workshop was awarded high awards by the Russian Orthodox Church.
