Natália Correia wrote a novel "A Ilha de Circe".
This novel takes place on Madeira Island and translates her notion of femininity. Later, Natália Correia developed this theme in the TV program "Mátria" and in her book of the same name.
Natália Correia held Gatherings at her house with Portuguese intellectuals and, later, before the 25th of April, she created a bar, the "Botequim", where she gathered intellectuals, recited poems, promoted Gatherings, etc.
Circe, daughter of a god, was banished to an island.
She seduced men who passed by, Ulisses was one of them. After seducing them, she transformed them into animals: pigs, wolves, etc.
Her song of seduction was like a hawk's song.
Natália Correia defended femininity in opposition to feminism (which earned her the hatred of feminist movements).
She defended femininity as the assumption by women of their feminine nature (outside of masculine concepts), of their natural capacity for seduction (as in the goddess Circe), of "giving men around" and,
The woman. By being aware of this, control yourself.
Hence all these animals.
The woman, according to her, should assume her natural sexuality.
In this painting, I try to “revisit” Natália Correia…
Rui Carreira was born in Angola. He has lived in Coimbra, Portugal, since 1974. As a child he began to draw and paint with passion. He took Drawing and Acrylic Painting classes at the Círculo de Artes Plásticas de Coimbra with João Dixo and Túlia Saldanha, an Oil Painting and Drawing course in Mozambique and at CEARTE, Coimbra, private Oil Painting classes with Rita Gardete (Coimbra) and Workshops with Daniel Africano (Porto). He held several individual and group exhibitions in Coimbra, Faro, Porto, Sintra and Beira (Mozambique). He is represented in several private collections in Portugal and abroad. His work stands out for its use of bright yellows, blues, greens and reds in an imaginary world circumscribed and created by himself. The scenes and figures represented create comical or more realistic feelings and sometimes the viewer may think that the painting is a "comic strip". "reinvent yourself" is also one of its "brand images": "Dare to take risks" is the challenge, creating a style is easy. It has already gone through monochromatic Abstractionism, Surrealism, Realism and other Phases. Always face Painting as a challenge and with honesty.
