Robert Indiana, nom d’artiste de Robert Clark, né le 13 septembre 1928 à New Castle (Indiana) et mort le 19 mai 2018 à Vinalhaven (Maine)1, est un artiste américain associé au mouvement du pop art.
Il s’est joint au mouvement Pop Art à New York après avoir obtenu son diplôme du lycée technique Arsenal à Indianapolis. Il se servait alors d’images inspirées de l’art commercial et de l’existentialisme.Au contraire de celui des autres artistes qui contribuèrent à l’éclosion du pop art, son œuvre est issu moins d’une rébellion contre l’Expressionnisme abstrait que d’une adaptation à un style figuratif des qualités plastiques des œuvres de Leon Polk Smith, de Jack Youngerman ou d’Ellsworth Kelly, adeptes d’une Abstraction colorée et contrôlée, rigoureusement « hard edge », et qu’Indiana fréquenta en 1956 à Coenties Slip (un quartier sud de Manhattan).
Lorsqu’il exploite un texte plus élaboré, il le retranscrit à la manière d’un signe, de sorte qu’il n’existe plus aucune différence entre un vers de Whitman, une strophe de negro-spiritual ou les mots clés de la civilisation américaine (Red Diamond American Dream Nr. III, 1962 ; God is a Lily of the Valley, 1961). Ce travail infligé au sens des mots, des images et des couleurs différencie Indiana des autres artistes pop.
