The sculptural composition is based on the myth of Laocoon from Greek mythology and tales of the Trojan War, vividly described in Virgil's Aeneid. Laocoon was the chief priest (seer) at Troy. When the Trojans saw under their fortress a wooden horse left by the Greeks as an "offering for Athena", they looked at it for a long time, wondering what to do with it. Some advised to bring it into the city, which was actively prevented by Laocoon, foreseeing the perfidy of the Greeks and seeing in such a "surprise" a hidden danger. He threw his spear at the horse with the words: "Fear the Danites who bring gifts!", which angered the goddess Athena.

When Laocoon and his sons were at the altar, they were attacked by two sea serpents, sent as punishment by Athena, the patroness of the Greeks in their war with the Trojans. After a long struggle, the serpents molested the priest and his children and hid in Athena's temple. The Trojans, misinterpreting the omen, took it as revenge of the goddess Laocoon for disrespecting her and unwillingness to accept the offering. As a result, it was decided to bring the Trojan horse into the city, along with which came destruction, because, as we know, inside the horse were Achaean warriors who put an end to the long and unsuccessful until then siege of Troy.
