Peter Lattey grew up in a Vernon BC, Canada surrounded by mountains, pine trees, sagebrush and beautiful lakes.  He spent his youth in the mountains and lakes there and developed a love for wood and natural forms at an early age.   He studied Art and Architecture at the University of British Columbia from 1965 to 1975.   He has traveled extensively in Europe and spent three months studying in Venice, Italy, where he was inspired at many of the major museums

In the early 70’s, he lived for two years in Papua New Guinea, where the “primitive” art and carvings had a great influence on him. In the 1990’s he lived in the rain forest of Vancouver Island, surrounded by giant cedars, Douglas fir, alder and hemlock trees and of course with totem poles.  He moved to Los Angeles in 1999 and returned to BC in 2014.   He draws inspiration from his surroundings as well as from his life in Papua New Guinea, Vancouver Island and Europe.

His earlier work was more abstract and could best be described as Jazz music carved into wood.  The forms and shapes flow sensuously with one surface flows into another, not always in an expected way, giving a delight to the eye and a feeling to the soul.

In his recent work he explores the human face as it expresses a variety of characteristics. His “masks” convey different emotions and expressions. People connect with the faces in different ways depending on how a particular face connects with that individual.  The mystery of that emotional or intellectual connection is what Peter strives to achieve.

He has lived for the past 20 years in Southern California and Vancouver, Canada
