Nació en la ciudad de Zacatecas el 25 de marzo de 1921 y cursó estudios en la Escuela Nacional de Pintura, Escultura y Grabado "La Esmeralda", bajo la tutela de Juan Cruz, Francisco Zúñiga y Santos Balmori, entre otros. Posteriormente también se dedicó a la docencia.  

Entusiasta coleccionista de arte precolombino, primitivo, oriental, grecorromano y medieval, así como de arte gráfico, Coronel perteneció a la generación de artistas que vivieron la consumación del renacimiento mexicano con la pintura mural.

Se trasladó a París, Francia, donde frecuentó los talleres del pintor Bremer y el escultor Brancusi, autores que lo influyeron de forma trascendental en su producción.

Su obra está inspirada en los colores del arte prehispánico y primitivo y se ubica en un muy especial expresionismo, tratado con formas simplificadas.

Su primera exposición individual la realizó en 1954, y años después exhibió su obra en Francia, Italia, Japón, Estados Unidos y Brasil.

Es considerado un innovador del arte mexicano porque su obra manifiesta una violencia semejante al portento mítico del arte antiguo mexicano y muestra un mundo lleno de hostilidad y lucha, pero también de sensualidad y erotismo.
