Wakinyan Tanka appears all-powerful on this concentric composition. Its wide wings cut the painting space in two. The upper part represents the sky, its habitat, with the symbols of rain clouds, air and lightning. The lower part corresponds to the fertile earth and the water source of life, underlined by the symbols of earth and water. The "medicine wheel" embodies the four directions and paths that lead to where Thunderbird resides. Access from the East is guarded by a Butterfly, from the West by a Bear, from the North by a Deer and from the South by a Beaver. The Butterfly symbolizes Metamorphosis and Grace. The Bear representing Strength and Wisdom. The Deer signifies Pride and Independence. The Beaver embodies the Family and the Builder. The Wakinyan likes to test us, but he is benevolent. He helps and protects people, even though he sometimes scares people. The symbol of the Thunderbird is the zigzag of lightning. He embodies rain and fire. He is a sacred animal totem for Native Americans because he is the keeper of truth. It is the shaman at the center of the canvas, who has the power of visionary evocation and who tells us this legend. For the creation of this painting, Jean-Luc Osswald found inspiration near the Sioux, Ojibwe, Navajo and Zunis peoples.

Jean-Luc OSSWALD was born in Strasbourg, in 1950. He lives and works in the suburbs of Paris. Very early, he felt the need to express himself through drawing and painting.
Encouraged by his Art professor and supported by his family, he takes off on an artistic path in Paris. He is accepted at the competitive entrance examination of the Collège Art et Dessin and later at the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts Appliqués et des Métiers d'Art. After graduating, he goes to Canada where he does some traveling. Upon his return to France, in 1972, he starts working for Draeger, an art editing publisher. He works on books about famous artists such as: Braque, Chagall, Dali, Fuchs, Magritte, Picasso...
Illustrator, chief of the art studio, artistic director, he works passionately, for nearly 30 years, as a graphic designer in advertising, a world dedicated to the cult of image and sign. His creativity leads him to experiment with digital imaging and editing while heading a team of graphic designers.
In 1999, he feels the need to widen his creative field and turns naturally to painting. Since the beginning of this adventure, he exhibits in numerous art galleries in France and abroad. His pictural work has received several awards.
He became a member of the Taylor Foundation in Paris in 2003 and in January 2005, he signs the manifest Un art pour l’Homme.
He teaches painting at a Plastic Arts Studio.
A permanent exhibition of his work can be seen in a Parisian area Art Gallery.
Today he is in search of his work’s echo... in France and abroad.
