Hoe Tribal Art stijl definiëren?

De beeldende kunst en materiële cultuur van inheemse volkeren worden tribale kunst genoemd, ook wel bekend als niet-westerse kunst, etnografische kunst of, meer controversieel, primitieve kunst. Tribale kunst heeft meestal een rituele of spirituele functie. Het ontwerp en vakmanschap van objecten uit tribale culturen, meestal met een landelijke oorsprong, wordt tribale kunst genoemd.

In de 19e eeuw beschouwden beroemde westerse kunstprofessionals niet-westerse kunst niet eens als kunst. De uitdrukking "tribal" zou een minder verfijnde vorm van kunst kunnen betekenen die wordt geassocieerd met primitivisme en suggereert een gebrek aan vaardigheid, ontwerp, intentie of concept. Naarmate musea echter hun bezit opnieuw onderzoeken en recupereren als erkenning voor de realiteit dat tribale kunst verre van eenvoudig en primitief is en vaak een uitvoeringsvaardigheid heeft die veel verder gaat dan we verwachten, krijgt het steeds meer publieke belangstelling. Bovendien heeft het de kracht om onze ziel te bereiken. Onze innerlijke instincten kunnen worden gewekt en we verbinden ons met hun waarheid als gevolg van hun meeslepende aanwezigheid en emotionele energie, waardoor onze perceptie van spirituele diepte wordt versterkt.

Historisch gezien hebben westerse antropologen, privéverzamelaars en musea voor etnografie en natuurlijke historie tribale kunstwerken verzameld. In museumcollecties kan tribale kunst worden onderverdeeld in drie hoofdcategorieën: kunst uit Amerika en Oceanië, vooral die uit Australië, Melanesië, Nieuw-Zeeland en Polynesië; en Afrikaanse kunst, met name die uit Sub-Sahara Afrika.

Afrikaanse tribale kunst

Steengravures, houtsnijwerk (maskers en sculpturen), sieraden, mandenmakerij, textiel, pijpen, muziekinstrumenten, wapens, kralenwerk en het ontwerp van architectonische kenmerken zoals deuren en muurversieringen zijn allemaal voorbeelden van Afrikaanse tribale kunst. De ontwikkeling van deze ambachten werd beïnvloed door de toegankelijkheid van tools, middelen en knowhow; niet alle stammen die zich bezighouden met deze artistieke inspanningen. Het meest typische materiaal was hout, vaak versierd met klei, verf, schelpen, kralen, ivoor, metaal, veren, dierenhaar, raffia en in zeldzame gevallen zelfs halfedelstenen.

Afrikaanse kunst was een fundamenteel onderdeel van een allesomvattende religie. De vitale krachten die naar verluidt in alle levende wezens aanwezig waren, werden vertegenwoordigd door specifieke afbeeldingen die fungeerden als hun belichaming of vertegenwoordigers. De essentie van stamafkomst werd bewaard door deze afbeeldingen van de doden, die vaak namens hen spraken en mensen de kans gaven om contact te maken met de geesten van de voorouders. Afrikaanse tribale artefacten werden meestal gemaakt als religieuze kunst - voor een specifiek ritueel of ceremonieel gebruik - ondanks het feit dat veel van de gebruikte vormen seculiere componenten bevatten en sommige kunstwerken puur decoratief en decoratief zijn.

Oceanische stamkunst

De subregio Oceanië bestaat uit vier verschillende etnogeografische regio's: Polynesië, Micronesië, Melanesië en Australazië. Oceanische tribale kunst verwijst naar de culturele tradities en creatieve geschiedenis van de inheemse bevolking die in deze vier gebieden leeft. Deze Lapita-cultuur had uiteindelijk invloed op het grootste deel van Polynesië, Micronesië en Melanesië. Een andere factor was de Vietnamese Dong-Son-beschaving, die bloeide vanaf ongeveer 600 na Christus en een belangrijke handelaar was in de westelijke Stille Oceaan. Bronzen artefacten van deze beschaving zijn overal in Oceanië gevonden.

Hoewel elke regio en eilandengroep zijn unieke esthetische tradities had die zijn kunsten en ambachten vormgaven, was oceanische tribale kunst gekoppeld aan heidense gebeurtenissen waarbij het bovennatuurlijke, geestenaanbidding en vruchtbaarheid betrokken waren. Er werd een grote verscheidenheid aan kunstvormen geproduceerd, waaronder bodypainting, tatoeage, schilderen, beeldhouwen, houtsnijwerk en textielkunst, waarbij de meeste materialen die door kunstenaars en ambachtslieden werden gebruikt, bederfelijk waren. Als gevolg hiervan is slechts een klein aantal voorbeelden - met uitzondering van stenen gebouwen en sculpturen - bewaard gebleven.

De monumentale stenen sculpturen (moai) op Rapa Nui/Paaseiland en de Marquesas, die een voorbeeld zijn van het gebruik van ontwerpen met antropomorfe figuren met uitstekende tongen en uitpuilende ogen, gebruikelijk in veel oostelijke en afgelegen gebieden van Polynesië, behoren tot de beroemde voorbeelden van Polynesische kunst die hebben overleefd. Andere voorbeelden zijn onder meer zeer versierde boombastdoek in West-Polynesië.

Omdat ze werden gebruikt in gecompliceerde heidense rituelen en cultuspraktijken in heel Melanesië, waren maskers een belangrijk motief in de inheemse kunst. Micronesische tribale relikwieën omvatten ook bewerkte houten kommen, beschilderde boten en gestileerde houten maskers naast bodypainting en tatoeage. Lichaamsschildering, rotsschildering, schorsschildering, rotsgravures, staande stenen, snijwerk, beeldhouwkunst en sierversieringen op gereedschappen en wapens zijn slechts enkele voorbeelden van de talrijke stijlen en media die in de Australische Aboriginal-kunst worden gebruikt.

Amerikaanse stamkunst

De Indiaanse kunst is sterk beïnvloed door zowel de nomadische levensstijl in jagerstijl van de eerste als de iets meer statische maar desalniettemin verarmde omgeving van de latere. Een ander belangrijk aspect bij de opkomst van regionaal verschillende creatieve tradities was de toegankelijkheid van hulpbronnen zoals hout, teenwilgen, metaal, dierlijk bot, klei en katoen.

Stammen in het zuidwesten waren experts in weven, keramiek maken en fresco's maken. Deze stammen omvatten de Zuni-, Navaho- en Hopi-volkeren, evenals de Hohokam in het zuiden van Arizona, de Ansazi in het noorden van Arizona en New Mexico, de Mimbres in het zuidwesten van New Mexico en de Ansazi. Inheemse Amerikanen uit het zuidwesten vonden zandschilderen uit, ook wel bekend als droog schilderen (met name de Navajo).

In het middenwesten waren alleen stammen verantwoordelijk voor het vormgeven van de cultuur. Deze stammen stonden bekend om hun ingewikkelde textielkunst en hun bekende grondwerken, of 'beeltenisheuvels', die werden gebouwd om op verschillende dieren te lijken. Tribale kunst omvatte ook gebeeldhouwde stenen pijpen met patronen variërend van extreem realistisch tot abstract, naast gebeeldhouwde houten schalen en gepolijste stenen en koperen ornamenten.

De regio Zuidoost produceerde ook pijpen in de vorm van vogels en dieren, fijn uitgesneden schelpen en uitbundig beschilderde kledingaccessoires. Ondanks het gebruik van ondermaatse klei, stond het bekend om het produceren van voortreffelijk aardewerk. Er werden aardewerkstukken gemaakt en versierd in een verscheidenheid aan bloemen- en geometrische patronen voor ceremonieel, religieus en privégebruik.

Native American mandenmakerij was een prominente vorm van kunst aan de westkust, met name in Californië. Met name de Iroquois-stam van de Noordoost-Indianen stond bekend om hun geweven wampum-riemen, stekelvarkenquillwork en maskers van de False Face Society. De beste tribale kunst die in het noordwesten werd geproduceerd, was beeldhouwkunst, met name houtsnijwerk. Totems, kleine houten beeldjes en maskers die minutieus werden beschilderd en vaak ingelegd met stenen en abalone schelpen behoorden tot de meest populaire stijlen van handgesneden beeldhouwkunst.

Hoe tribale kunst moderne kunst beïnvloedde

Tegen het midden van de 19e eeuw, toen meer expedities tribale artefacten terugbrachten, begon de belangstelling voor wat toen bekend stond als primitivisme / primitieve kunst - typisch de kunst van zwart Afrika - te groeien. Aanzienlijke tribale kunsttentoonstellingen uit de late 19e en vroege 20e eeuw toonden ook niet-westerse kunst aan de westerse kunstgemeenschap.
