This work was painted with acrylic and oil colors on aluminium, cut and mounted on a canvas mdf board, by the occasion of the tragic shipwreck off Pylos (Greece, June 2023), where at least 600 migrants (including children), lost their lives.
The huge migration problem, of mainly young people from poor countries in Africa and Asia who struggle to cross the Mediterranean, hoping for a better life in Europe, is intractable and costs hundreds of human lives every year.
This issue is linked to climate change which makes life even more miserable in poor countries. In some of them, there is already such a scarcity of water that life is almost impossible.
Unfortunately, the advanced countries of the EU are not doing what they should do to deal radically with these problems, which by time are getting even worse.
Although the majority of the victims are men, among them there are also several young women, (many with their children). I chose to portray a woman and give her features and style of a western lady. Someone who does not lack dignity and pride and her life has the same value as the life of any western woman.
The portrait painted in opart style, consists of squares that lose their coherence and fall into the waves of the raging sea. Both the portrait and the sea waves were painted on aluminium, which was cut and mounted on a high quality canvas board. This way, the artwork got a 3D character.

Nicholas Smyrnios (surname indicating a Smyrna origin), was born in Edessa, Greece and grew up in the historic city of Thessaloniki, surrounded by Greek, Roman and Byzantine antiquities. From such a classical environment, he  found himself in a totally different place in his early twenties, when he emigrated to Stockholm and started his studies at the National University College of Art and Design, considered the ultimate incubator of Scandinavian modernism.
These different environments and the cultures they represent left a strong imprint on Smyrnios's artistic profile, who dedicated the first years of his artistic career to finding paths and bridges between them, in order to define his own identity. The body of the work he has produced since then is characterized both by his passion for the vast Greek cultural heritage, as well as by his devotion for the latest modernist movements and trends.

Working in relevant professional and academic environments in both Sweden and Greece, he gained valuable experience and exceptional skills which have been reflected in his long-lasting creative activity.

Engaged as a graphic designer as well as a teacher in applied arts education for more than 30 years, Smyrnios managed to establish his artistic identity as a “child of his time”, interacting continuously with the modern spirit and new media, adapting and discarding the elements of the Zeitgeist.
