With the spread of Islam, many languages adopted the Arabic script as a primary writing system. In order to represent phonemes that Arabic does not cover, adaptation led to the additions of hundreds of new letter designs. In the past century, many of these languages replaced Arabic with Latin, Cyrillic, or Hindi scripts. Other languages are currently following the same lead. The artist has created an installation that addresses the loss of Arabic script use. It is literally built using hand-crafted Arabic letter bricks representing the languages that still use the Arabic script. Letters of languages that abandoned Arabic script will be broken down the floor leaving gaps in the installation body. The gap is growing and this message is a call to action. Adopt a letter to help spread the word and keep Abjad alive!

Nedaa Elias is een hedendaagse Syrische kunstenaar. Zijn werken richten zich op ecologische en culturele problemen met betrekking tot hedendaagse samenlevingen in het Midden-Oosten. Onderwerpen die eerder door Elias zijn onderzocht, zijn onder meer de stopzetting van het gebruik van het Arabische schrift, evenals het effect van vogeltrek op de economie van de Golf. Nedaa Elias richt zich op openbare installatiekunst.

In 2017 werd hij genomineerd als beste internationale soloartiest op World Art Dubai, waar hij zijn installatie Pursuit of Abjad te zien kreeg. Zijn creaties vertegenwoordigen de relatie tussen mensen en cultuur vanuit verschillende perspectieven, waarbij hij het publiek uitnodigt om met de werken om te gaan en de resultaten te interpreteren. Voor zijn onderzoek naar de kleurentheorie van Paul Klee werd Nedaa Elias geciteerd door kunstgeschiedenisgeleerde Sztabińska Paulina in haar boek "The performative turn in the visual arts - The art of Paul Klee" en The Daily Hatch.
