Marina Nimmo is a contemporary sculptor residing and creating in both London and France. Over the course of 16 years as an art educator, she has developed a unique ability to seamlessly transition between various artistic disciplines, including sculpture, painting, printmaking, and installation. Her playful approach to engaging audiences stems from her experiences teaching art, where she responded to the inquisitive minds and ideas of young artists.
In 2017, Marina achieved a significant milestone by graduating with a Master of Arts in Fine Art from Chelsea College of Arts, University of Arts London. This marked a pivotal moment in her career, prompting her to transition from teaching to dedicating herself full time to her artistic pursuits. Currently dividing her time between the bustling city life of London and the tranquility of rural France, Marina experiences a notable shift in influences. The constraints of urban routines fade away, unveiling the ever-changing seasons and fostering a deep connection to the natural world through meticulous observations of flux, cycles, and perpetual motion.
Marina Nimmo's sculptures serve as embodiments of the dynamic cycles inherent in our existence. Drawing inspiration from the ebb and flow of seasons, rivers, and tides that assertively traverse our surroundings, her ideas evolve to inspire sculptures that reflect the fragile relationship between humanity and the natural world. Utilizing the earth itself as a medium, she creates delicate forms that emphasize the urgent need to respect and address the alarming environmental changes.
The process of crafting her sculptures involves hand-building with thick coils of clay, initially presenting as weighty and coarse. However, as the forms dry, Marina embarks on hours of meticulous refinement, pushing the material to its limits to achieve the perfect balance of fragility. The resulting artworks capture the audience's attention with their sensual shapes, showcasing both technical prowess and a profound sensitivity to the materials. Marina Nimmo's creations invite viewers to contemplate the delicate beauty of nature and reflect on the imperative to safeguard the environment amid its ongoing transformations.
