Marie Gobert is a contemporary French paper sculptor. Gobert appreciates how simple and accessible paper is, yet how elegant, fashionable, and delicate it can be when it is formed. In her artistic endeavors, she aims to emphasize this delicate quality. She can adjust the pressure and orientation she applies to the scalpel to get the proper amount of curling or deformation of her elements by cutting by hand because she is constantly aware of how smooth and elegant the sheet is.
Gobert experiments with stretching the boundaries of balance to create structures that resemble fractals as she accumulates and rearranges these pieces of paper, losing herself in the surreal world that the paper encourages in her. Her artistic approach incorporates the time spent in a significant way. She works methodically, cutting and stacking tiny pieces of paper endlessly to see what will come out of them, like a scientist behind a microscope.
Marie Gobert was born in 1984, in France.
