This piece honors Mark Rothko whose paintings invite viewers to immerse themselves in the experience stimulated by his large floating, layered fields of color without clear boundaries. This orientation, in contrast to a painting representing a subject, was revolutionary. His borderless rectangular forms cannot be done in the solid, sculptural materials, though using his basic shapes in three dimensions extends fleeting emotional states into more enduring and stable temperaments that can define persons. Stained redwood with its grained texture and shades of color provides the organic base for expressing these muted affective traits.

Louis Moffett is a contemporary American artist whose fascination with the shapes in nature, ranging from the human figure to watercourses, landscapes, and especially mountains, serves as the foundation for his artistic endeavors. Preferring sculptures over drawings and paintings, Moffett is drawn to their solidity and substance, appreciating the interplay of an outer form with an internal core, mirroring the complexity of the human experience.

His academic journey led him to Louisiana State University, where he pursued studies in psychology and philosophy, including the philosophy of art, ultimately earning a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. Within the realm of academia, Moffett's interests gravitated towards the psychology of art. He delved into publishing papers on theories of art appreciation and conducting research on the connections between sculpture preferences and personality traits.

During his university years, Moffett also immersed himself in studio classes, exploring drawing, jewelry-making, and sculpture using various mediums such as clay, plaster, wood, and stone. Notably, his early success came when he sold his first wood sculpture to a Professor of Sculpture. Post-graduation, he relocated to Palo Alto, California, where he practiced psychology until his retirement in 2014.

Throughout his professional life, Moffett maintained a passionate commitment to his artistic pursuits. He continued to engage in photography, sculpture, and painting, augmenting his skills through drawing classes and receiving instruction in wood carving from Ruth Waters in the San Francisco Bay area.

Louis Moffett's artistic expressions have found recognition and exhibition in prominent locations such as Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Washington DC, and Palo Alto, California. His creations have not only graced gallery walls but have also found a place in private collections in U.S. cities like Baton Rouge, New Orleans, Washington DC, and Palo Alto, as well as across the pond in London. Moffett's artistic journey reflects a seamless blend of academic rigor, psychological insight, and a lifelong dedication to capturing the beauty of nature through various artistic mediums.
