Paul Bong’s shield sculptures welcome visitors at Brisbane International Airport, and his work has been featured in many key galleries and museums such as the Institute of Modern Art.
Paul tells the stories of his people through interpretations of cultural objects relating to his heritage. His work explores complex Aboriginal narratives through a sculptural approach, painting and etching contemporary versions of the shields his ancestors once carried for protection.
Paul’s work has also been acquired by the Australian Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial.
I met Paul through his pop-up Gallery in West End, and was hugely inspired by his work and determination to keep his culture alive through his art.
