this is the first of my round paintings. I had always had it in mind to paint my version of a "tree of life" and this is the result. I immediately felt at home in the circular format. this is the first of my round paintings. I had always had it in mind to paint my version of a "tree of life" and this is the result. I immediately felt at home in the circular format. No more painting to the corners.. just focus on the important bits in the middle! The foliage seems to like to fill the space at the top and the roots at the bottom. I painted it in quite a traditional way. Thee didn't seem much point in getting clever with it. The subject itself is magnificent enough.
The rest of the canvas is a sort of frame within a frame. It has now become a format I have adopted. I have had box frames made and painted them with my oils to match the colors perfectly. They are ready to hang. No trips to the framers and tricky decisions.

I retired from illustration about 8 years ago and have been a full time landscape painter since then. I still do a few portraits, and paint a few animals, but it is the landscape , or more specifically, the trees, that make me want to paint each day. I now live in the middle of the Balkan mountains surrounded by the forest and have an endless source of inspiration. The overwhelming green of summer has little appeal, but as soon as the leaves begin to change color , I begin to feel inspired and gather endless reference for new work. So, most of the paintings here are autumnal, with the odd blossom picture dotted about.
