Why Mulatto Solitude? Inspired by a work by Jean Baptiste Carpeaux entitled “La Négresse captive”, which represents a black woman restrained by ropes at the mercy of executioners. I remembered the fierce resistance fighter Rosalie nicknamed La Mulâtresse Solitude who paid for her quest for freedom with her life.
I therefore had to reinterpret Carpeaux's work to represent a freedom fighter who tears off with her teeth the rope that imprisoned her in the original work. I engraved “Never Slave” at the bottom of the statue in homage to the Mulatto Solitude.
