“VÂV”
Calligrapher: Ismet Gulnihal (1961)
Miniature Art: Safiye Ocaklı
Date: H.1414/M.1993
Dimensions: (With Frame) 35 x 35 cm.
Annotations: Calligraphers emphasize the letter "Vav" because it encompasses all the movements of the 29 Arabic letters, demonstrating its power in the written form. It is the twenty-ninth letter in the Ottoman alphabet, the sixth in the abjad order, and in the Phoenician alphabet, with a numerical value of 6 in abjad calculation. The name "vâv" from the Phoenician alphabet has remained unchanged and passed into Aramaic, Hebrew, and Arabic. In the Phoenician language, 'vav' means "nail, wedge, ship mast, support." The evolution of the letter's form mostly indicates its connection with the latter meaning. According to Halil b. Ahmed, in Arabic, 'vav' signifies a "large-humped camel" (and "weak man") (el-Ḥurûf, p. 31)."

"Primary School: Cevizli Elementary School in Kartal, Istanbul. After graduating from elementary school, she continued to attend Quran courses. After completing her memorization of the Quran, she studied Arabic grammar and syntax from books such as Nurulizah, Kuduri, Molla Jami, Akaidi Shemsiye, Durer, Usulu Hadis, Tafsir, and Kiraat. During this time, she completed her middle school education at Camlica Girls' High School. She completed her high school education at Bahcelievler High School through external exams. She then passed the university entrance exam and graduated from the Business Administration Department of Ankara University.

At a young age, she used to copy the inscriptions in mosques onto paper, trying to satisfy her interest in calligraphy. Years later, on September 15, 1990, with the help of a friend, she began learning calligraphy from Calligrapher Yusuf Sezer. She first learned Rika script, then Nesih script, and Sulus script, and received her certificate on December 19, 1998.

During the same period, she continued her studies with Prof. Dr. Ali Alparslan Bey at Mimar Sinan University Faculty of Fine Arts, practicing Divani and Thuluth scripts until her teacher's death.

She began producing calligraphy materials that were lacking in the art of calligraphy at that time. She manufactured ink varieties, pen knives, pen types, inkwell varieties, paper, and practice papers using traditional methods.

Her products were purchased by art enthusiasts both domestically and internationally, and were also purchased by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and sold in accordance with Dösim standards. She also became a member of the presidency's calligraphy material procurement committee with the Artist Introduction Card. She received an "honorary certificate" in 2001-2002-2003 for her work. In 2000, she received a "thank you certificate" for her exhibition and conference work under the Kağıthane District National Education Department as part of the 700th anniversary celebrations of the Ottoman Empire.

Married with one daughter, Ismet Gülnihal continues to produce calligraphy materials and strives to contribute to the art of calligraphy with her works."
