Breve resumo da história do Palácio Nacional da Pena (Sintra,Portugal) / Brief resume of National Palace of Pena history
In the 12th century, at the top of the Sintra's mountain, there was a chapel dedicated to Nossa Senhora da Pena, or Penha alluding to the large cliffs that exist here. At the beginning of the 16th century (1503) the construction of the Royal Monastery of Nossa Senhora da Pena was started, founded by D. Manuel I, who donated it to the Order of St. Jerome. In 1834 with the extinction of religious orders in Portugal the monastery is abandoned. In 1836 Fernando de Saxe-Coburgo and Gotha (D. Fernando II) married with D. Maria II. Two years later, in 1938, D. Fernando II acquired the monastery and the surrounding area by public auction. The following year begins the reconstruction of the monastery. But D. Fernando and D. Maria II had "a bigger dream" and in 1843 the construction of the "New Palace" began under the direction of Baron de Eschwege. The work is completed in 1847. Many of the details of the romantic construction are due to D. Fernando II.
On July 7, 2007 this Palace was elected as one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal.
But this is just a small summary of the history of this beautiful and magic Palace of dreams. To know more about, I strongly urge you to consult, for example, the wikipedia (search Pena Palace,Sintra, Portugal), and/or at www (doc) parquesdesintra (doc) pt. And when you came to Portugal please visit it. It's realy realy wonderful :)
