Frank Keita, also known as Pithaïs, is originally from Liberia, where he spent his formative years and embarked on his journey as a self-taught artist. Despite harboring a deep passion for art from a young age, Frank encountered resistance from his family, who did not initially accept his artistic pursuits. However, his artistic talent was evident even during his elementary school years, where he demonstrated a knack for painting banners and signs.
Driven by an insatiable creative spirit, Frank adorned the walls of his home, including the bathroom, with countless drawings and paintings. It wasn't until his former school principal intervened to attest to Frank's artistic abilities that his family began to recognize his talent. In a society where the profession of an artist was not highly esteemed, Frank persisted, initially experimenting with watercolors before delving into the world of oil painting under the guidance of a local artist.
Throughout his career, Frank painted themes close to his heart, often highlighting the plight of children and seamlessly transitioning between figurative and abstract styles. He approached his art with a deliberate intention to engage viewers progressively, allowing them to immerse themselves and find solace within his work. For Frank, painting was a therapeutic endeavor aimed at evoking smiles and providing comfort to those who beheld his creations.
Frank's career was intricately intertwined with the management and operation of art galleries. He played a pivotal role in establishing and overseeing Galerie Tatou in Bamako, eventually venturing to establish his own spaces, including Galerie Sadia and Galerie ALFRA (named after his partner, Alice, and himself). His artistic prowess led him to participate in various exhibitions both in Mali and abroad, where his work resonated deeply with audiences.
Sadly, Frank Keita passed away in 2010, leaving behind a legacy of profound artistic expression. His body of work continues to serve as a testament to his creativity, passion, and unwavering dedication to the craft of painting.
