Hollywood Boulevard Nights (2020) Painting by Dutch Montana

Hollywood Boulevard Nights: I paint Southern California, and I paint both the beauty and the dark side. This painting is an abstract of Hollywood Boulevard at night, as I see it in my minds eye, where the black soul of LA comes out at night and spills onto the street, where the dreams of the dreamers has come to die in lights of the alleyways and streets of Hollywood. This is a complex 36 x 48 x 1.5 abstract oil on canvas piece of work done on high quality canvas stretched professionally over splined wood backing. Look closely to see the layers and “digital” texture in this work. Multiple layers of multiple colors that provide the background for a slick black intricately textured overlay that gives the viewer a hint of the lights of the boulevard at night which is what the colors represent. An additional overlay of yellow lights and a lavender blue detailed "grid" pattern provides the piece with its "digital" feeling. He used palette knives of various sizes and a unique technique to add the overlay in which a material is painted, then laid over the work and pressed into the piece, creating areas of the painting where one can see intricate grids of black and electric blue overlaying the colors. The view is like what one might see in an intoxicated haze looking down a boulevard, with colors representing the lights of the boulevard, and, as in reality, the streets of Hollywood have a dark and “seedy” side to them which the piece represents by overlaying the black screen. The result is a work that evokes a night feeling, when the activity of the famous LA boulevards come to life, and also the dark side of Los Angeles and Hollywood. It is a place where many have brought their dreams, where many a dream has come true, and where many a dream has died, yet Hollywood and LA and the California Coast continues to beckon people from around the world with its persistent perception – and reality - of being the home of glamour, fame and riches.
