In "Sweltering Sun," a mixed media painting by DB Waterman, the canvas bursts with vibrant hues of yellow, green, lemon yellow, light blue, black, sienna and rust, which come together to depict the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on cities. This large square depicts the scorching heat waves that have become an all too familiar consequence of global warming. Amid the relentless heat, the painting depicts a poignant scene of children seeking cooling in the coolness of city fountains.

A group of children, rendered in dark silhouettes, run, laugh and play around a city fountain. Their carefree spirit creates a powerful juxtaposition of innocence against the harsh reality of climate change.

The fountain, symbolizes an urban oasis - a small refuge where the young people find solace against the scorching temperatures. The water evokes a sense of relief. The children and the dynamic water play convey the essence of youthful joy in its simplest form.

db Waterman is a contemporary Dutch artist. In her works she assembles original photography, assorted papers, acrylics, oil, charcoal, ink, and pencil. The variety of resources she is able to use has proved indispensable to her. The biggest challenge the collage medium posed was its unforgiving lack of transparency. Finding a way to replicate the effects of transparency afforded by paint, especially watercolors, was a large victory for the artist. The preparing labor shows through in her collages; layer upon layer of material remains visible in the finished pieces. 

db Waterman believes that the body of her work is characterized by her skill for reinvention. Having always loved the appearance of weathered walls plastered with peeling paint and old posters, she revived this aesthetic with hopefully a keen and professional eye. The creative objective of her work is to “make something beautiful out of dilapidation.” Her tableaus explore the dissonance between old and new materials, intertwined in the most beautiful way possible to create dreamlike and melancholy images.
