Penelope, eine spartanische Prinzessin, wurde durch einen Wettkampf die Ehefrau des Odysseus: Dieser siegte in einem Wettlauf, den die Hochzeitsbewerber bestreiten mussten. Sie war das Muster einer treuen Ehefrau. Sie wusste ihre zahlreichen Freier, zu denen vor allem Antinoos und Eurymachos gehörten, während der Irrfahrt ihres Gatten zu vertrösten, indem sie vorgab, sie müsse erst ein Totentuch für ihren Schwiegervater Laërtes weben. Doch in der Nacht trennte sie immer wieder auf, was sie am Tag gewebt hatte. Das ging über drei Jahre gut, bis die treulose Dienerin Melantho sie verriet und die Freier sie bei ihrem nächtlichen Treiben überraschten. So entschied sie sich, den Freiern eine unmögliche Aufgabe zu stellen: Sie sollten mit Odysseus’ Bogen zwölf Axtringe durchschießen. Keiner der Freier konnte den Bogen spannen. Nur dem inzwischen zurückgekehrten und von Athene als Bettler verkleideten Odysseus gelang dies, woraufhin er alle Freier tötete.
Penelope, a Spartan princess, became the wife of Odysseus through a competition: he won a race that the wedding candidates had to compete in. She was the model of a faithful wife. She knew how to put off her numerous suitors, especially Antinous and Eurymachus, during her husband's wanderings by pretending that she first had to weave a shroud for her father-in-law Laërtes. But at night she kept unraveling what she had woven during the day. This went well for three years until the faithless servant Melantho betrayed her and the suitors surprised her during her nightly activities. So she decided to give the suitors an impossible task: they should shoot through twelve ax rings with Odysseus' bow. None of the suitors could draw the bow. Only Odysseus, who had since returned and was disguised as a beggar by Athena, managed to do this, whereupon he killed all of the suitors.
