Scuola San Marco is a building in Venice, Italy, which once housed one of the six great Venetian scuolas. Located in Piazza Santi Giovanni e Paolo, one of the largest squares in Venice, next to the cathedral of the same name.
Scuola was built by the brotherhood of St. Mark in 1260. Inside housed a hospital, an orphanage and educational facilities. However, in 1485 it was destroyed by a great fire, and over the next twenty years it was rebuilt under the direction of Pietro Lombardo with savings collected by members of the fraternity. The facade was completed by Mauro Coducci.
The last rays of the sun illuminate the tops of the building, turning them into gold.
Claude Monet depicted a similar plot in one of the artworks in series dedicated to the Rouen Cathedral.
