“The Piper” occupies a special place in the work of the Canadian storyteller. It's not just an image; it is a story frozen in time that comes to life in the viewer's imagination.
The little gnome, gray-bearded and barefoot, appears before us in a funny cap, which gives him the appearance of a comic character from a children's fairy tale. But his eyes, hidden under the shadow of the visor, look seriously and thoughtfully. He sits on a book - a symbol of knowledge and wisdom, which perhaps contains the secrets of great musicians of the past or mysterious melodies forgotten by the world.
The pipe, an instrument so simple, but at the same time capable of producing enchanting sounds, becomes an extension of the gnome’s soul. Every movement of his fingers, every exhalation breathes life into the black and white composition, filling it with music that we can only imagine.
Black and white graphics emphasize contrast and depth, allowing the viewer to focus on form and emotion rather than being distracted by color. In this world, where white shines brighter and black is deeper than darkness, “The Piper” becomes a bridge between reality and fantasy, between the earthly and the magical.
With this drawing, Victor Molev invites us to think about eternal values, about the power of art and music, which know no boundaries and time. This work reminds us that even in the smallest and most inconspicuous creature there can be great beauty and harmony hidden.

Victor Molev is a contemporary award-winning Canadian artist. He is working in the styles of Decorative Realism, Fantasy, Symbolism and Surrealism. In the mid-1970s, as an aspiring young artist, he took drawing and painting lessons under the apprenticeship of Moscow sculptor Tatyana Vishnyakova. But it wasn’t until his early twenties that Molev became familiar with the works of Salvador Dali, Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, M.C. Escher and Frank Frazetta through books and magazines. Molev was incredibly inspired by these artists which became like mentors to him.
After receiving an education in architecture, the artist worked in the field for ten years. He then worked as a set designer at the Pushkin Opera and Ballet Theater. Both of these jobs are still reflected in the creative processes of the artist. He has created his own unique and intuitive world of dreams and absurdity. His works are sincerely naive and kind.
Victor Molev was born in 1955, in Gorky, Russia. His works were exhibited all over the world, including the Art Museum of Saint-Frajou, France. Molev has also participated in numerous international competitions of humorous drawing, and won numerous silver and bronze medals.
