Shakyamuni Buddha is also known as Siddhartha (proper name) and Gautama (generic name). He was the son of Shuddhodan from the Gautam clan, Shakyas (hence Shakyamuni - "a hermit from the Shakya tribe"). Born in the village of Lumbini (now the territory of Nepal). After the birth of his son, at the age of 29, Prince Siddharthail spent the rest of his secular life and went in search of Truth. Asceticism and selfless devotion do not lead him to the goal. Then he chooses the "Middle Way".
