“James Baldwin’s French House “ is the Original oil painting on canvas. Size: 40x50cm. Available for prints. Baldwin settled in Saint-Paul-de-Vence in the south of France in 1970 in the old Provencal house of the famous village. His home was always open to friends who often visited him during their trips to the French Rivie. American artist Beauford Delaney made Baldwin's house in Saint-Paul-de-Vence his second home, often setting up his easel in the garden. Delaney painted several colorful portraits of Baldwin. Fred Null Hollis also became friends with Baldwin during this time. Actors Harry Belafonte and Sidney Poitier were also regular guests of the house. Many of Baldwin's musician friends dropped by during the Jazz à Juan and Nice Jazz festivals. Among them were Nina Simone, Josephine Baker (whose sister lived in Nice), Miles Davis and Ray Charles, for whom he wrote several songs. In his autobiography, Miles Davis wrote: I read his books and loved and respected what he said. When I met Jimmy, we opened up to each other and became real great friends. Every time I went to the south of France to play Antibes, I always spent a day or two at Jimmy in Saint-Paul-de-Vence. We just sat in this big big beautiful house where he told us all kinds of stories and played ass ... He was a great man.
